Why can't SpyBot Search and Destroy repair/eliminate redirected hosts files?

I downloaded Smart Engine and at the time did not know it was a monster in disguise. Then the program promptly disappeared. I emailed the website and never got any good answer. Now my computer is half dead. I have a Dell running WinXP, SP3. Thank you.
