Question about Wifi detection.?

Why is it that my laptop that I bought at $750 at the end of 2007 detectes a wireless network and can connect to the internet but my dad's laptop that he bought at $450 at the end of 2008 detects the same network but wont connect to the internet??? My dad's laptop connects to the internet at other places but not here for some reason.....
